Why do you think Sikes and Toby were cruel and selfish ?

Sikes and Toby were cruel and selfish because they were unable to see past anything but themselves. From the text, we can infer that they too grew up in poverty, and then turned to crime as a way to sustain themselves. It was every man for himself.
