I think themes of conformity and freedom of simply being is at the heart here. Society demands conformity and fosters oppression to achieve a very narrow definition of "normality". McMurphy fights the forces that would keep these men institutionalized and feel the need to be kept this way. Through Chief's resurrection, McMurphy succeeded.
