Why does Mac reach for his cirgarettes through the Nurse' window?

Nurse Ratched is angry at the patients over watching the World Series baseball game. She says she is going to punish them for their "rebellion". That's when McMurphy gets angry walks over to where she’s sitting, and busts his hand through the Nurses’ Station window.
