I suppose that Oroonoko represents the "noble savage" at the time. He is strong, smart and has the type of moral fortitude that the west comprehends. The story, like most colonial slavery tales, is sad. I would think individual reaction depends on the specific reader. Slavery, in any form, is generally distasteful to read about. Oroonoke's story, in particular, is tragic because we see the breakdown of an impressive man.
