Oryx and Crake

What effect is created by the reference to colonialism on pages 4 and 5? Compare it to references to self-help on page 23.

Hey, my page numbers do not match yours. I really like this book but need to make sure I know where you are. Can you quote a little of both sections for me? Thanks.

page 4-5: it is the strict adherance to daily routine that tends towards the maintenance of good morale and the preservation of sanity. he says outloud. he has the feeling he is quoting from a book, some obsolete, ponderous directive written in aid of european colonials running plantations of one kind or another. he cant recall having read such a thing, but that means nothing. etc.

page 23: each one of us must tread the path that laid out before him, or her, says the voice in his head, a man this time, the style bogus guru and each path is unique. it is not the nature of the path itself that should concern the seeker but the grace and strength and patiene with which each and every one of us follows the sometimes chalenging... etc.

There is the juxtaposition of the rigid conformity enforced by colonialism versus the freedom of the individual discussed in page 23. The reader really has to ponder just what type of world was created by Crake.
