Why does snowman feel compelled to protect the Crackers?

Snowman had promised Oryx and Crake to take care of the Crakers.I suppose he feels a certain responsibility for the very existence of the Crakers. They are the end product of a chain of events that Snowman was very much a part of. The Crakers are like naive little children that need protection.
