Emelia refuses to be complacent in Desdemona's betrayal. She stands up to both Othello and Iago, even though it means her death. Shew tells the truth about the handkerchief and renounces her evil husband Iago. She refuses to cover for him. Desdemona refuses to agree to Othello's accusations of adultery. She is strong in her own way. She also tries to help Cassio, even when it is to her own peril. Desdemona also defies her father's wishes and marries Othello. All of this goes against the social norms for women at the time.
