What does this metaphor mean and how does it relate to the scene of the story?

Desdemona laments to Cassio that she has been unable to plead or advocate his case to Othello. She compares her failed attempts of advocating for Cassio to an instrument that is out of tune. Like an out of tune instrument, Desdemona is not affecting Othello the way she would like to.
