One theme could be that we do not appreciate what we have when we have it. We see much of this developed through the scene in which Emily is with those who are dead and provides some comment as she revisits some of her childhood. Another might be that small town life relates all people in ways that can be looked at as ways that people throughout the world behave. Things such as high school, sports, marriage, and death are all universal events that all people must face.
