The boys faced problems on all fronts. They were considered outsiders in school, and thus, they were isolated. They had problems at home because their parents considered any type of assimilation (namely the way they dressed) as turning their backs on their native culture. Lastly, the boys were constantly pressured by street gangs to become members, as they were easy marks. Their desire to find somewhere they belonged made them vulnerable.
