Did Cory and the boys make it out the neighborhood? What does the author want the reader to think ?

Cory is killed when the neighborhood falls.

Keith, Cory's son, leaves the neighborhood, joins a gang, and is violently murdered.

Marcus is killed when the neighborhood is attacked.

Gregory, like Marcus, is killed when the neighborhood is overrun.

As you can see, neither Cory or her boys made it out of the neighborhood.
