Describe how the war fines of WWI impacted the German economy?

In Chapter One, we learn that the fines imposed on Germany were responsible for the lack of money in Germany. Men were out of work, and their families were out of food...... even worse they were out of hope. According to the text, the value of money was so low that people carted it around in wheelbarrows to do their shopping.
