What led Peter to know the soldiers were planning an ambush near where he left Pax?

In Chapter 22, Peter sees a newspaper headline about the war. As he was leaving to find Pax, he told Vola that the place where the army was closing off was close to where he had left Pax. He was familiar with the spot because he and his friends used to play war there.
