Persepolis is based on the author's childhood, and it tells the story of a young girl coming of age in Iran at the time of the Islamic Revolution. Told from a child’s point of view, the author succeeds in simplifying an extremely compex situation on order to make it easier to understand.

The theme of the story is our main character's stuggle to find herself, while at the same time trying to assert and gain a sense of independence. Iran's history makes the story even more interesting because themes that would otherwise be common and widely accepted have a comepletely different meaning.
