Why do Marjane's parents need to smuggle Western items into Iran? Why can they not get them in Iran? (Kim Wilde)

These items are not allowed in Iran. Thus, they need to be purchased elsewhere and smuggled back in. It is dangerous to have illegal contraband, and Western culture is not embraced by the government.
