Emilio Renzi is a young journalist and aspiring writer who writes the crime section of the newspaper El Mundo. Chapter by chapter it is revealed that, in addition to being a character and witness, he is at times the narrator of Burnt Silver, despite placing himself, in turn, as a character in the story. He has a certain sympathy for criminals, and is suspicious of the police's intentions regarding the money and fate of "the twins" and the Cuervo Mereles.

Emilio and Renzi are the middle and second names, respectively, of Ricardo Piglia, author of Plata Quemada. As a character, Renzi appears in many other texts, in addition to the fact that Piglia's diaries have been published under the title The Diaries of Emilio Renzi.
