For what cause was blood shed?

Yeats wrote this poem following the Dublin Lock-Out and The Hugh Lane Bequest. Robert Emmet started this rebellion in reaction to these events. He tried to stop it in the middle when he witnessed a man being pulled from his horse and beaten until death.
