Which are conflicts in the novel?

The conflicts of the story are all based upon Stephen's war within himself. He struggles daily, trying to find his own path in life and debating which loyalty should take precedent. Should he base his loyalty with his family, as a member of the church, politically as a proponent of Nationalism, or as an artist?
