Both Mr.Darcy and Mr. Collins have a pompous attitude towards Elizabeth. They give the effect of settling for Elizabeth, like she will do despite her class. Collins is more condescending telling Elizabeth that despite her "loveliness and amiable qualifications," she may never get a second chance at him. Darcy seems resigned to take Elizabeth like she was the only one who applied for the job.

"In vain I have struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you."

What exactly has he "struggled" with. Both proposals lack any passion or enthusiasm.
