Outwardly, Mr. Collins is very proud of his ties to Lady Catherine, which he believes trumps his own status on the social rung. He is silly, not overly intelligent, and believes himself to be quite the gentleman. Outwardly, he flatters the women, exhibits gallantry, and loves to hear himself speak.
