At this time marriages were set on largely financial and class ideals. So really, the chance comes by a suitable suitor meeting a suitable girl where both families concerned benefit. That's a lot of chance to ask for but I suppose chance is still involved. In modern Western marriages chance meetings play a large part in unions and matters of the heart.
