ing sentence establishes the ironic tone of the novel. What is it about hte language of the sentence that alerts the reader not to take it as the statement of fact that it appears to be? How is this impression reinforced by the paragraph which follows?

The first sentence reads, It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife. This does set the tone for the rigid class system in England as well as the importance of marriage as a deal to be brokered, not for love, but for economic considerations for both families
