The above quote was found in one of Austen's letters that was written to a friend (?). In the letter, she describes her work as "The little bit (two inches wide) of ivory on which I work with so fine a brush as produces little effect after much labor." Metaphorically, Austen is comparing her appraoch to art as intricate and detailed.... the way an artist creates finely crafted ivory.
