“And of this place,” thought she, “I might have been mistress!" (Ch. 43).

Property means respect and social station. Without money, women like Elizabeth and her sisters are at the mercy of those around them...... they hope to make the best possible marriage, but are limited in their prospects....... unless of course...... people fall in love.
