Consider Mrs. Bennet sending Jane over the Netherfield on horseback rather than in a carriage, "because it seems likely to rain; and then you must stay all night." (ch 7) She feels that if she dumps her daughter at a rich family's place she will be accepted more readily than on her own merits.
