His entries which are found on his calendar provide the provide the epigraphs for the various chapters in the novel. Because he is an outsider, his wisdom is unfathomable to the people in Dawson's Landing, but he is brilliant. He does not get much work because of this inability to communicate; however, his unique wit and intelligence send him on the track of "fingerprinting" which ultimately helps him win his case to save the twins and convict the real murderer.
Each of the journal entries, otherwise known as "Pudd'nhead Wilson's Calendar," are used to foreshadow upcoming moral dilemas. Entries like, "There is no character, howsoever good and fine, but it can be destroyed by ridicule, howsoever poor and witless," pique the reader's interest and make us wonder what's coming next.
