Why does Shaw delay Eliza's entrance in Act 3?
Shaw needs to first set the scene. Most of the beginning text between Higgin's and his mother gives us a great deal of insight into Higgin's character, and his discussion of Eliza as a mere experiment foreshadows the way he will cast her aside later on. It also helps us understand the role that his mother will play later on in helping Eliza.
