Why might the author have chosen to name the characters as he did? Why do some of the characters have general names such as Mother's Younger Brother while others have general names such as Coalhouse Walker, Jr.? Does this affect the way we relate to them?

This depends on the specific character you are referring to. Some names were slang or nick-names describing what a character did or was connected to.
