Why does the narrator cut the title page out of the book of poems?

Coming across the book of poetry with its inscription, the narrator realizes that Rebecca called him “Max,” instead of “Maxim.” She assumes that “Maxim” is the name that he gives to dull and unimportant people. The narrator is distressed and offended by this.
