Rebecca

Why is the fire that destroyed Manderley probably a good thing for the narrator?

Manderley is Maxim's estate that has burned down prior to the beginning of the narration.

The narrator was suffocating in Manderley. She had no identity. Indeed she did not even have a name in the story. As the heroine (the narrator) continues at the estate, Rebecca's grip seems to get tighter even though Rebecca is dead! Maxim does not seem too sympathetic to the narrator's plight. Manderley is not the healthiest place for the narrator. It is actually quite creepy. It represented Rebecca's hold over the narrator's world. Once destroyed, perhaps, the narrator can move on.
