What are Jeff's disappointing discoveries about the U.S. government and war

I believe his biggest disappointment with everyone and everything in general came when he found out that the the rebel army (Jeff was a rebel), was going to fight with new repeating rifles that were not only smuggled in but sold to the rebels by a Union soldier.
