Knickerbocker is on of several aliases for Washington Irving. The name Knickerbocker is famous for being connected to one of the most famous hoaxes in American literature. Knickerbocker supposedly left these stories as payment to his landlord for rent that he was unable to pay. The landlord was instructed to try and sell the stories and keep any income they might generate as payment for past due rent.
