After a failed business venture, Irving turned to writing. He lived in Birmingham, England with his brother-in-law Henry Van Wart. One night the two reportedly were reminiscing about old times. They both felt nostalgic and Irving became inspired to write his story. Apparently he locked himself in his room all night and compared that from waking up from a long sleep the next day.
