When Cassie and TJ. are at the Barnett store, Cassie realizes they are not being served on purpose. When Cassie reminds Mr. Barnett that she is waiting, he rudely says.

"Then you get her out of here," he said with a hateful force. 'And make sure she don't come back till yo' mammy teach her what she is."

This is Cassie's first experience with racism directed at her because of the colour of her skin.
