why does mary logan say "...one day we'll have to pay it. believe me... one day we'll pay." why is mary worried? ho might uncle hammer's actions make a difficult situation even worse?
Cassie tries to tell Uncle Hammer about her day in Strawberry but Big Ma keeps interrupting her. Finally, she tells him the whole story, and Uncle Hammer wants to know if it was Charlie Simms who knocked her off the sidewalk. He jumps up, saying he has his own gun when Mama glances at her husband's shotgun, and runs outside. Mama tries to stop him, but he takes off in the Packard. Mr. Morrison jumps in with him right as he is pulling away. There is nothing to be gained and everything to be lost by provoking another confrontation with Simms. Uncle Hammar's actions also might get him in trouble or killed. White people, especially Simms, would not tolerate a black confrontation.
