Why does Uncle Hammer reference the war twice in this chapter? How does this involve prejudice behavior and his relationship with whites?

The Civil War was largely fought over the issue of slavery. The North wanted to abolish it and the South wanted to keep it. Sadly, even many years after the loss of the South, attitudes of whites had not changed much.
