how do the student react to the news that they're going to have their own text book this year? what does this reveal about the conditions at their school?

The students are excited they will have there own textbooks despite the fact that they were thrown away by the white school because of their bad condition. This shows us that the black school was poor and desperately needed the most basic of school supplies.
