How didn't the word nigger impact the story

for example when they stoped at the gas station and he said you nigger how did that impact or effect the story

The word was commonly used in a degrading, thoughtless, unfiltered way during the time period depicted in the novel. Thus, the word doesn't impact the story. Is it demeaning, degrading and disgusting.... yes, it is! None-the-less, the author wanted her story to be genuine and realistic.
