What is the effect created by the author telling this story from the perspective of a child? Does it make the racial incidents seem more or less sinister?

In my opinion, the perspective makes the racial incidents seem more sinister. Note, this novel was written for young adults, thus, our protagonist and the other children follow suit. The racial incidents are horrific, but Cassie's innocence and lack of knowledge leave of hanging.... we're left to imagine.
