What are the Logan kids doing at the beginning of chapter 2? What does this tell us about the family's situation?

This is in the beginning of chapter 2 but I don't have the book with me at home.

In the beginning of Chapter Two, the Logan children are helping Big Ma and Mama pick cotton in the field. This tells us that the family has land and a crop, but they don't have money to hire people to help them.
