Cassie learns about the injustices of life and inherent racism of whites. Over the course of the novel, Cassie directly experiences racism and learns the real dangers of being black in the South in the 1930s. Cassie sees how blacks are oppressed and frequently lynched. She begins to understand that she cannot fight every battle: she must pick and choose them carefully. Fighting the racist system has costs to both her and her family. Cassie grows up over the course of the year, learns some sad truths, and experiences the strength and love of her family.
