Why can't the Logan family pay their debt for August?

I need this answer for literacy and even though I read the book I can't exactly remember. Isn't it because Mama lost her job, or Papa couldn't return back to the railroad, or was it because their cotton was destroyed by the fire and cotton prices were low to begin with? Please help.

Papa has been home in order to help with the planting and because he's worried about leaving the family. His job at the rairoad pays the mortgage and the taxes, and he hasn't been working. Things will soon get work, as Papa is hurt coming home from Vicksburg.
