Why do you think T.J. said that the gun was needed for protection?

T.J. was trying to justify his actions. In reality, T.J. stole the gun in order to ingratiate himself with the Sims brothers. He sought their friendship and approval. In the end, he did nothing more than commit a crime for two people who cared nothing about him.... alienating himself from the people who cared.
