Why is papa scared to ask uncle hammer to loan him money?

chapter 10 i think and the rest of the question i ask don't need to worry about it because i got it but thanks anyway. :)

Papa didn't want Uncle Hammer to find about what the Wallaces had done. He was afraid that if Uncle Hammer found out, he'd start trouble with the Wallaces and end up getting himself hung.... "I don't wanna risk that temper of his when he finds out what the Wallaces done." (Page 149)
