Why were Mama and Uncle Hammer so shocked at hearing what Cassie said to Mr. Bernett?

No one, not even Uncle Hammer or Mama, would speak that way to Mr. Barnett in his store. Cassie didn't realize that her words and interruption could cause repurcussions..... Uncle Hammer and Mama were both well aware of what could happen.
