Romeo and Juliet

Act 4 scene 1

Because the friar prepares a potion contrary to anything known to science, some critics have labeled this a supernatural element in the plot. Is it plausible that the friar should have in his possession a potion capable of making a person appear dead for a set length of time?

Plant science and apothecary science were well established in Elizabethan times. They certainly had sedatives made from plant extract so we can accept the Friar's potion, even if the idea of a prolonged "sleep" is a little far fetched.
