Daughters literally belonged to their fathers before marriage. Unions among nobility were very much business transactions. Daughters were generally seen as an economic liability. When a daughter refuses to bend to her father's wishes, he looks weak and emasculated. This is how Fathers of nobility generally saw their daughter.
