Mercutio's comments might first be seen as light-hearted.... completely lacking in depth. Over the course of the first act, however, we see that Mercutio is not merely a boastful, lusty boy...... he is a passionate, mature, young man.

Through Benvolio's comments, we come to see a deep feeling, young man, who doesn't approve of senseless violence. He is a peaceful man, who wishes for the fighting and violence to end.
