Benvolio and Tybalt are character foils. They bring out the opposite traits of each other. Benvolio attempts to keep the peace while Tybalt tries to stir the fight. Benvolio implores Tybalt to help keep the peace and Tybalt replies, "Peace? I hate the word. As I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee."
