How was the story of Romeo and Juliet received by the audience that day and would today's audience receive the book in that same way, and why?

This play was one of Shakespeare's first plays that we know that he produced; he was a young writer just beginning to make his mark. We can assume that they liked the work of this young playwright, although there would have been no female in the role of Juliet. Men only acted on the Elizabethan stage, so Juliet's role would have been played by a man and the very romantic word play between the two would have been much more important than the very intimate "loving" viewers might see today. Today, this play continues to be a favorite and has been remade in film and performed over and over again on stages around the world.
